It's quite simple. Mandami is not a member of the Party. Yes, he's running as a Democrat, but he's not what the Party owners would like a "Democrat" to be.

By the way, I'm not advocating for continuing the Electoral College. I am suggesting that directly voting may not be the best alternative. Perhaps a Parliamentary system like that in Canada and much of Europe would be a better option.
