I wish it were better, but I at least got *something* from it. The director of THE BONE WOMAN! I hope she gets to go and do something original again.

So, I guess, while the film isn't necessarily very good, I just found it kind of fascinating to watch and observe how they're both so of their time and how wildly different those two stylistic choices can make one film a generational touchstone and the other becomes a streaming throwaway diversion.

Like, that's all entirely in line with how different films like this are today compared with those of the original's era. Curtis Hanson's film was an apex predator of the erotic thriller heyday and its campy style became synonymous with a genre. Drab colours and vague character outlines are so 2025!

The upper middle-class fantasy is modernised, trading in white picket fences for the large floor-to-ceiling windows of modern architecture. Warm film tones are swapped for cold digital sleekness. No mom-dream doctor husband here, the script doesn't even bother to explain how they live so lavishly.

Technically, it's a feast. Loved the costumes and the makeup and one of Desplat's finest scores in a while. But in adapting the novel, Del Toro has obviously made some big changes yet still never feels free of being 'another frankenstein movie'. A reframing would have felt really special and new.

Was split into two sessions (so, two separate tickets). First went from 10am to 3pm with a 15min intermission halfway through. Second half started at 3:30 with another 15min intermission. Ended around 8:45pm.

More of the delightfully entertaining subtitles from THE SPIDER LABYRINTH.
