I think the massification of the classroom also set up a vacuum of personal teaching relationships that made public higher Ed beyond the community college (which has smaller classes and a teaching only mission) particularly vulnerable

@tressiemcphd.bsky.social has a great analysis I saw on Instagram that I also teach explaining how austerity in public higher Ed in the us forces schools to do public private partnership deals for resources and to seem "relevant" to elites, drawing on @dmgreene.bsky.social work on libraries
