We are GLAIKIT. We exist to publicise interesting and extraordinary tales from Glasgow's past, some of which might even be true!
A new plaque we've just put up. It's a bit different from our usual ones as its been done with the Lord Kelvin Appreciation Society to mark the 180th anniversary of Lord Kelvin's discovery of Absolute Zero. We swear this is all true, honest, and you know you can trust us! 😀

Have you ever wondered why there are ramps leading off the M8 in Tradeston that just end in mid-air? They're all that's left of the Glasgow Car-oport, and our latest plaque tells the unbelievable story behind this little known piece of the city's history.

Have you ever wondered where John Wyndham got the idea for the eponymous human-munching abulatory plants in his classic 1950s sci-fi novel The Day of the Triffids? If so, this plaque in Glasgow's Botanic Gardens provides an answer. Admittedly, it's nowhere near the true one!

Hey Elon, how about reviving Archibald Watt's Sky Carriage as mode of luxury transportation? It's just as viable as your Hyperloop idea, and you get to travel in real style, too!

Our plaque marking this auspicious event is sited on Queen Street opposite the statue of the Duke of Wellington, probably the most famous example of the tradition of Coning anywhere in Glasgow.

Today is the 573 anniversary of the Saint Mungo Mile, the world's first mass participation sporting event, which first took place in Glasgow on New Year's Day 1452. Our plaque on High Street tells the story of this historic event.

This plaque tells the unusual and little known story of the industrialist Sir Tristan Farquhar and how he met his end while trying to prove that Kelpies don't exist. It can be found the west bank of the River Kelvin in Glasgow just north of Kirklee Bridge.

Seventy years ago, Glasgow launched its short-lived prohibition on potatoes. While few remember this episode, it's an important part of our city's social history. You can read more about it on our latest plaque.

The story presented in this plaque took quite a bit of research to uncover. It's about Glasgow's most flamboyant billionaire and the forgotten reason why he built the Finnieston Crane.

Covered up by the authorities, this plaque finally reveals the story of Glasgow's Great Train Robbery. It's sited at the old Kelvinside Railway Station on Great Western Road in the city's west end.

There's an interesting, and little known, history to that tunnel, which we believe is linked to the origins of Irn Bru, Scotland's other national drink, and it must be true 'cos we put it on a plaque! 😀

Our first plaque tells the extraordinary tale of the Elephants of Maryhill Locks. You can find it at the top of Maryhill Locks on the Forth and Clyde Canal in Glasgow.
