2025 is a year of big moments and hard truths. COP30, the 10-year anniversary of the Paris Accords, and the UN International Year of Glacier's Preservation all coincide.

Time to make ourselves heard! Glaciers are not just distant scenery but water towers and living ecosystems for billions!

Rapid, justice-centred emissions cuts, finance for vulnerable communities, and glacier-informed adaptation can still save important freshwater supplies, the species and cultures that depend on them.
November 11, 2025 at 11:50 AM
From November 10-21, the world's governments will meet in Belém, Brazil for COP30. This will be another opportunity to decide on tougher climate policies, as the window to protect large parts of the cryosphere is closing.
November 11, 2025 at 11:50 AM
Yet we are potentially on a course of up to 3.0°C of warming by 2100, well past the 1.5°C our governments have pledged in the Paris Climate Accords in 2015. Somehow our governments act as if there is time to spare. But glaciers cannot wait - we cannot wait!

This not only affects local wildlife, but also how the oceans move heat and carbon around the globe, connecting these remote openings to climate systems far beyond the poles.

Follow Glacierwatch to learn more about how the cryosphere shapes our planet’s future.

With climate change altering wind patterns, ocean currents, and sea-ice thickness, the timing and location of polynyas are shifting. Some are becoming more frequent; others vanish altogether.
November 6, 2025 at 3:49 PM
Beneath the surface, these ice-free zones drive ocean mixing, releasing heat and gases, and supporting bursts of plankton that feed entire Arctic and Antarctic ecosystems. They also play a crucial role in forming deep ocean water, a key part of Earth’s climate circulation.
November 6, 2025 at 3:49 PM
They can last days, weeks, or entire seasons, sometimes covering thousands of square kilometers.

Polynyas are lifelines in the polar night. They let marine mammals like seals and whales breathe, and give seabirds access to food.

The long Arctic night may seem distant, but its changes reach us all.

Scientists warn that shrinking ice seasons mark climate tipping points. The Arctic night regulates global heat and ecosystems. When it changes, the effects ripple worldwide.
October 27, 2025 at 9:37 AM
The Arctic is warming faster than anywhere else. Ice forms later and melts earlier, breaking life cycles. Seals and polar bears lose their hunting grounds; snow-dependent animals lose cover.
October 27, 2025 at 9:37 AM
Animals adapt too: fox and rabbit fur turns white for camouflage, bodies fatten by up to 50 % to endure scarcity. Plankton like Calanus glacialis stockpile fat in summer sunlight, surviving the darkness on stored energy.
October 27, 2025 at 9:37 AM
For millennia, Indigenous peoples like the Inuit have thrived through these winters. They built shelters such as igloos and sod houses to withstand fierce winds, and crafted layered garments from caribou or seal skin that are insulating, windproof, and breathable.

It means acknowledging the pain and choosing to act anyway. It means grief and rage fuel community, solidarity, creativity.

Big oil and reactionary forces benefit from fatalism: if people believe the game is lost, there is no accountability, no mass mobilisation, no pressure on the system. Hope doesn’t mean ignoring the collapse, it isn’t naive, but necessary.
October 19, 2025 at 6:24 PM
Doomism produces paralyzing eco-anxiety and subsequently inaction. And yet, when fear is paired with agency, when people feel they can do something, that changes the narrative. As climate scientist Michael Mann puts it: “Warming can be stopped… doomism won’t help the fight.”
October 19, 2025 at 6:24 PM
When the message becomes “it’s too late,” the result is paralysis. Researchers found that doom and gloom messaging actually reduces the likelihood of people taking action.
October 19, 2025 at 6:24 PM
But here’s the truth: believing that “we’re cooked” and that nothing can be done doesn’t help. In fact, it plays right into the hands of big oil corporations and far-right politics by giving them the comfortable story of inevitability and inertia.

💙 Still, Alpine ibex are a symbol of mountain strength: they move, they adapt, they persist. But their future depends on keeping the high alpine environment healthy and that means caring about glaciers, snow-cover, clean water, and cooler summers.
