En 2008, les médias russes se lancent dans une campagne de propagande soutenue, pour montrer que Mikheil Saakachvili serait si instable qu'il aurait besoin d'une aide psychiatrique, le qualifiant régulièrement de « cinglé » et consacrant des heures de grande écoute à des émissions de discussion impliquant des psychiatres analysant le comportement de Saakachvili[123].
En 2020, plus de 15 000 sites internet géorgiens sont piratés et affichent une image de Mikheil Saakachvili, avec la mention "je reviendrai", la cyber-attaque est imputée à la Russie, comme celles effectuées en 2008[124].
En avril 2024, la campagne de désinformation est reprise par la Chine, à l'encontre de Raphaël Glucksmann, qui a été son conseiller et est alors candidat à l'élection législative européenne[125].
