As if summoned by Xie Lian's very thoughts, there was Hua Cheng, heading in his direction. Draped in red plaid flannel over a fitted black tee, he was just as stunningly handsome as the night before. He brightened as he spotted Xie Lian, rivaling the sunlight coming from the opposite direction. "Gege!" he called, hastening to close the distance. "Looks like I had good timing." He held out a familiar-looking bag from the shop two doors down. "Special delivery." "San Lang?" Xie Lian dazedly took it, still absorbing the fact that Hua Cheng was, in fact, here in front of him. One curious peek inside the bag revealed two fluffy baozi nestled together; steam from the freshly cooked pockets of dough carried the scent of their savory meat filling. "What's this for?" "I wanted to bring you something when I stopped by." Xie Lian's stomach gave a small flutter that he promptly dismissed as hunger. His appetite could wait. "I can't accept this," Xie Lian said, remembering his modesty. "What about you?" "I bought them for you, gege. You spoke so highly of them." Xie Lian's cheeks prickled in the chill morning air, warmer than the buns he held. "But I can't just eat in front of you," he insisted, looking helplessly up at Hua Cheng. "Won't San Lang at least let me share?" "If you insist," Hua Cheng replied with a gracious curve of his lips.

Hua Cheng shut his eye, hyperaware of every point of contact. Long ago, when he was a boy on the cusp of manhood, he'd been able to look but not touch, the first taste of adolescent lust making him ache in ways he hadn't understood. Now all he could do was touch, because Xie Lian was everywhere within the cramped space. Hua Cheng understood the ache now, but knowing didn't make it any easier to endure. He liked to believe he was stronger than such base desires, but resisting Xie Lian's presence was like resisting the pull of the waves tossing them about—utterly futile. The warmth of Xie Lian's body brought the most sublime torment to his senses, like prodding a not-quite-healed wound just to feel the nerves sing in affirmation of being alive. It was something he knew he shouldn't savor. The concept of being alive was a distant memory; he didn't have the right, but he still held him close, covetous, willing that warmth to soak deep into his bones and reside there forever. The coffin gave a particularly violent shudder. Xie Lian braced a knee between his legs, dangerously close to brushing a place that recalled its humanity unbidden in a flash of heat. "Don't move." He would apologize later for the commanding brusqueness of his tone, but all that mattered in the moment was that, mercifully, Xie Lian had gone still. Trembling fingers curled into Hua Cheng's sleeve. "What if it breaks?"

I really just wanted to write thirstily about Hua Cheng, but I guess you all are into that. You're the real ones. 💕 All the support keeps me motivated to write, so expect more Hualian in 2025. ☺️
