Gotta love how the American mind is completely unable to compute nuance and eclecticity, and someone is either exactly like you or the enemy.

Nah, it’s more like if liberalism had reworded labour more than capital and industry, the masses wouldn’t have abandoned it as a political project. It’s not about smiling. But clearly we have two different understanding of politics and history so let’s agree to disagree and move on 🤷🏽

I didn’t say failing to stop did I? The inability of liberal parties both in IT and DE to redistribute wealth after losing the war, and the socialising of reparations among workers, moved them to the right. Liberalism creates the conditions for fascism because of its unwavering alliance to capital.

And the fact that fascism is usually the result of liberalism inability to handle the contradictions of capitalism is quite an accepted fact in historical research and political science.

Mussolini was kicked out of the socialist party because of his position on the war and irridentism. He then moved completely right and waged political terror on socialists. Yes our PM, a fascist, came to power after our Dem party moved completely to the centre and gave up on the left.

And btw I graduated and work in politics so if you need book suggestions about this don’t hesitate.

Fascism was born in Italy first, and it emerged from the failure of liberalism and centre-looking socs. Yes, not the only factor and the outcome of WWI played a role - especially in managing working classes economic hardship. I don’t know what Truthout is. I’m Italian, we study this shit intensely.

I think Mehdi is 100% right to be hard on the liberal left. It continues to enable fascist types by pandering to the opposite aisle and ignoring that the working class is in a very bad place economically. Historically, fascism is born out of liberal regimes.

Yeah, civil rights activists, anti-apartheid movements, women rights movements, lgbt movements, they all phone-banked like mad and that’s how progress was made. Noted

The fact that you think “resisting” is phone banking just proves Mehdi’s point.
