My biggest takeaway from this course is that communication is much more than just talking with others. It also made me open my eyes on how many different approaches there are. It is also so interesting to see how theories are added, grow, and change with advances in technology. #UTcommtheory

My favorite theory we covered was the Family Comm. Patterns Theory. I liked comparing the different types of family structures and also chatting here to see what kind of families others have. It made me think about how I grew up and what I would like to keep or change for the future. #UTcommtheory

Agenda-setting theory is still relevant. I think that algorithms take more importance nowadays, but that doesn’t mean that an agenda isn't pushed in other ways. My social media is still curated to push specific topics and even introduce new ones to see how they can fit into my feed. #UTcommtheory

AI has been growing right in front of our eyes. The media has been pushing the message that we must be careful. I found a few articles pushing the fact that AI-powered toys were sharing harmful information #UTcommtheory

A media personality I have a parasocial relationship with is Lorelai from Gilmore Girls. I relate to her independence, humor, and family struggles. I admire how she stays positive in tough situations. Watching her helps me connect, laugh and be entertained, and look up to her. #UTcommtheory

Netflix shapes cultural values not only through its movies and TV shows but also through its documentaries. Athlete A, for example, shows the dark side of sexual abuse within USA Gymnastics. It shows how the survivors were treated and other ethical and institutional issues as well. #UTcommtheory

Context collapse for me means generally tailoring my posts, especially on instagram with thought beforehand knowing I have many different audiences. If not, something like this might happen…🫣 #UTcommtheory

Positive Impact: AI can help guide me when doing creative assignments. Using AI as a tool rather than just to get answers has immense results. If I have an idea but don’t know how to structure it, AI can make a framework that allows me to think of things I wouldn’t have on my own. #UTcommtheory

I think that I can relate to assertive assimilation #2 sometimes. I try to always be overprepared, especially when it comes to school work or projects. I often take charge and do more work than is needed. I do still try to also listen to my group and combine their ideas with my own. #UTcommtheory

My face when I make a joke but forget that not everyone laughs at dark humor. I just try to smile and laugh off the awkwardness...😅 #UTcommtheory

I feel that I respond best to the participation approach. I prefer knowing what is happening and having the opportunity to have a say, especially in my own work environment. Knowing that I am being considered makes me feel like I am part of something rather than just a worker. #UTcommtheory

I feel that many major sports organizations could use a culture shift. I think that many sports are trying to focus more on the athletes mental health, but it is still looked down upon. I would recommend more coverage of athletes speaking out and their successes because of it. #UTcommtheory

Simple but clear syllogism:
All figure skaters are athletes
I am a figure skater
Therefore, I am an athlete

I agree that stronger ties use more media. With my boyfriend, who I see almost everyday, I also use media to communicate through texting, sending reels, or even snapchat. I always want to keep in touch and feel close to him, and using multiple media sources helps me do that! #UTcommtheory

On TikTok, I often see videos about a person's personal life and sharing their family’s struggles. Even if it is their life, if it involves other people, I feel like it shouldn’t be shared without the consent of others, otherwise they are missing mutual privacy boundaries. #UTcommtheory

The central dialectical tension of Nina and her mom in the movie Black Swan, shows a great example of connection vs autonomy. Nina loses herself because she and the black swan become one due to the pressure. Also, her mother tries to control her daughter and lives through her. #UTcommtheory

In skating competitions, tensions and the competitive aspect makes it hard to make friends. Verbal communication in the locker room before or after the competition allows you to ask questions to get to know eachother, making you feel comfortable and less awkward at later competitions. #UTcommtheory

When I am not told the whole truth, I feel like I am less important even if it is for good reason. When my mom didn’t disclose that my grandfather was in the hospital, I was extremely upset and didn't talk. I felt that I had the right to know even if she was just trying to protect me. #UTcommtheory

I grew up in a protective family. My dad, raised by immigrants, emphasized “trust your elders.” My mom, from a laissez-faire family, gave us the structure she lacked. I had to follow rules for chores, homework, or hanging out with friends, and my opinions or ideas were discouraged. #UTcommtheory

With Option 1, I didn’t text my best friend for hours with read receipts on. She texted again twice, asked if I was mad, then called, worried something was wrong. Since I usually reply right away, her response showed she cares and noticed the change right away. #UTcommtheory

On vacation in the Bahamas, I really wanted to go to Pig Island (“I”), but my family didn’t want to because it was expensive. I chose not to pressure them or go alone, and instead I stayed with them to avoid being selfish or making them feel bad. (“Me”). #UTcommtheory

I found that the socio-cultural tradition was the most appealing. I find that understanding cultures, norms, and overall different ways of life to be very interesting. Communication in different cultures is so incredibly diverse and important to remember and study. #UTcommtheory

I believe the quantitative and qualitative criteria are the most important. They give us measurements (more quantitative), structure, and ways to observe and form experiments that are important for testing and understanding theories. #UTcommtheory

I am more drawn to the interpretative approach. I find it hard to discover a singular truth as the book explains the objective approach. I like seeing all the different sides of social experiences and ideas because I feel that some things can be controlled or predicted but not all. #UTcommtheory
