Oooh, are you not familiar with the hell that is "wintry mix"? It is the worst of all the weathers. I would take windchill of -20 over wintry mix.

I'm pretty sure these drunk guys could take those Gen Z Republicans (at least some of whom agree that it's Holocaust shit but think that's a good thing).

Cries in "according to the app on my browser, it is 6 degrees Fahrenheit out." You are right, and I really need to move south.

Oh god, they're actually doing the Hunger Games!

Which is funny, because the Puritans didn't like Christmas at all because they thought it was Catholic.

Everyone pretends that it's not exploitation because it's job training. But the jobs don't exist, and the entire enterprise depends on the massively-undercompensated labor of the "trainees".

I think that very few people in academia have come to terms with what it means that most schools depend on grad student labor but prepare grad students for a job market that doesn't exist.

Christian romance is a whole thing! It's romance for Christian ladies. Mostly, I think there's no sex outside of marriage and vague references to Jesus. But this one may have sex outside of marriage and then a Jesus-flavored redemption arc.

I lived in Hyde Park in 2000, when Chicago police coerced Corethian Bell into falsely confessing to raping and murdering his mother. Bell was homeless and mentally ill but was well known and liked around the neighborhood, and UofChicago law profs took on his case. Otherwise he'd still be in prison.

I've seen some other publications kind of imply what People is saying. So horrifying.

According to the culture videos we watched in my German class, a key part of German culture is being super proud of their bread and complaining about the bread anywhere else they visit.

A friend of mine once espoused the theory that the key to good food is peasants: rapid proletarianization kills a food culture. Have no idea whether that's true, but it would explain Ireland having better food than most of the UK. (Have had good food in Ireland and the UK, fwiw.)

Columbia is in New York City. Yale is in New Haven. Penn is in Philadelphia. Harvard is not technically in Boston but is basically in Boston.

If that place is too expensive for you, there's always this one! www.instagram.com/p/DRhYV0EjkdE/ (Note: I moved to Iowa from Chicago 15 years ago. Probably wouldn't do it now, but Iowa has some things to recommend it. But don't move to a house that is infested with meth residue or ghosts.)

This historic home in Muscatine, Iowa, is a 3 bed, 1 bath fixer upper located in the West Hill Historic District. With its unique character and charm, it's a must-see for anyone looking for a historic...

Mine buys art from local visual artists, which you can check out and hang on your wall. You can check out books, DVDs (and a DVD player), toys, video games, and science kits. They have a maker space and computer help.

Also, and I know this is a radical idea, what if we lived in a society where you could fire someone who deserved to be fired without worrying that their child would starve or they'd lose their healthcare? Let's fight for that, not for the right to shout racial slurs on the job.

I really hate the private dorms, which seem like the worst of all worlds. We have some of that, but most juniors and seniors still live off campus in shitty apartments. We barely have enough dorm space for first years. (Big public.)

I think that, because of the demographics of cruise-takers, this probably isn't that rare? People must die on cruises all the time.

A fun thing about shingles is that even my mild case hurt like fucking hell, kept me from sleeping for weeks, and now increases my chances of getting Alzheimers. The vaccine is kind of a drag, but I don't understand why anyone would skip it.

They think they're protecting their kids and only hurting those other, lesser kids, but it may not work out that way for them.
December 7, 2025 at 1:39 AM
This is true, but to a large extent, their kids are being protected by herd immunity. We had a mumps outbreak at the university where I work, and almost every kid who got it was vaccinated. It turns out that the mumps vaccine stops the spread, but individuals may still be susceptible.

I have an irrational hatred of Caitlin Flanagan, but she would be delighted to have a hate-series about her, plus she's kind of boring, so I wouldn't produce a 4-part documentary. Maybe Woodrow Wilson?

People in the romance community make this point. It's tempting to argue that romance shouldn't be censored because it's not porn, but that distinction will result in some romance (queer romance especially) being censored anyway. We need to fight censorship, not exempt ourselves from it.

I don't think people from DC know how to navigate in snow, either. (Source: grew up in and learned to drive in DC. Learned to drive in snow when I moved to the upper Midwest.)

I get mine while taking a shower. When I have a big project, I end up taking way more showers than is good for my skin, not to mention my environmental footprint. Solitaire is way better!
