New report out today on the costs of different transmission technologies. I find the question of undergrounding comes up a lot lately given concerns about grid expansion or wildfire risks. Glad to see my stock answer that undergrounding onshore lines costs 4-5x per km is about right. 🔌💡
Labour to press on with pylons as study shows underground cables more costly
IET report says running cables below ground about four and a half times more expensive than overhead lines

I'm excited to see this deal by Bloom Energy to provide 1 GW of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) for AEP.

Yes, it's unabated natural gas, but the fuel cell has a stream of pure CO2 that can be captured, it has high efficiency and cost reductions could be big.

AEP, Bloom Energy 1-GW fuel cell deal to power data centers would set new record
Market analysts disagree about the significance of the deal, however, which represents the largest commercial procurement of fuel cells to date.

The primary energy fallacy is the idea that all primary energy from fossil fuels must be replaced with an equivalent amount of clean energy.

BUT: This is not necessary because conversion losses do not need to be replaced. More than 2/3 of all primary energy is lost as waste heat.

Great piece from @billmckibben.bsky.social about the stories we've overlooked 🔌💡

🟢 Solar + Wind = Costco! Not Whole Foods 😂
🟢 We are deploying a nuclear power plant's worth of solar *per day*
🟢 California cut natural gas use for electricity generation by 25% in one year
