I thought this was interesting. A friend of mine asked me about the origin of Marcasite stones in a brooch he’s interested in. I said they were a naturally occurring stone and had been used since Victorian times. I was right, but a deeper dive provided fascinating info. See alt for the detail.
Yes, marcasite is a natural stone in the sense that it is a naturally occurring mineral.  However, there is an important distinction to make, especially when talking about jewelry: • Marcasite (the mineral): It is a natural iron sulfide mineral (\bm{FeS_2}), but it is very brittle and reacts with moisture, which can cause it to crumble and produce sulfuric acid. For these reasons, the actual mineral marcasite is rarely used in jewelry today.  • "Marcasite" in jewelry: Historically and in common use today, the small, sparkling, faceted stones referred to as "marcasite" in jewelry (especially vintage and Victorian styles) are actually made from its more stable chemical cousin, pyrite (also an iron sulfide mineral, \bm{FeS_2}). Pyrite is also a natural stone.  So, the material being called "marcasite" in jewelry is the natural mineral pyrite, carrying the traditional name "marcasite" from a time before the two minerals were scientifically distinguished.

This lovely gold filled two-tone brooch from Harry Iskin (mark, H & I overlaid) can also be worn as a pendant. Rose and yellow gold filled 120/12K is a charming floral design with rich, green stones is from the mid 40s, probably right around the end of WWII. Some details about Mr Iskin. Harry Iskin was born in London in 1888 to Russian parents. He came to the US in 1908 and his occupation was listed as jewelry maker as early as 1911. He married a woman from Pennsylvania and they had 2 daughters. He founded his company officially in 1939. Unfortunately by 1953 and having survived the WWII years things weren’t looking good and the bankruptcy was filed. He died in 1968 at age 82.
