I was talking with a friend recently about my ‘most Pittsburgh’ thing I’ve ever done and hands down it has to be having my naturalization ceremony in the Heinz History Center, home of a special Mr. Roger’s exhibit, only blocks from the opening day of the Furry convention.

Grumpily working from home today, but wanted to share this hilarious pic of my cats taken only moments before they did their best WWE reenactment in the background while I was on a Zoom meeting...

Fergus has recently discovered laps, and that he can request pets any time by sitting on or near one. Mornings are rough, but apparently belly rubs help.

Two-cat household milestone unlocked: cuddle puddle was spotted earlier today, complete with social grooming. They even both deigned to sit with me while I read this evening.

Corbin has become the eldritch horror that extends disembodied limbs full of claws beneath the door trying to grab Fergus during treat time. (Ignore the dirty floor)

Fergus is still pretty committed to his weeks-long game of ‘the floor is made of lava,’ but has been gradually increasing his time in locations he can see me and Corbin and be seen in turn.

I hoped to lure him out of the basement but since there’s another cat in the house I knew I wouldn’t be able to tell who was eating food left out… so I bought cameras to try to track him. Luckily, he’s coming up to eat and drink.

I left food and water for him, and based on the amount of dust that was left nearby was 99% certain he was getting down to eat and drink, using a nearby shelf to get up and down. I’d check multiple times a day that he was there, but Fergus liked his new perch and refused to leave

Fergus, understandably scared, did not want to come down. And if I tried to reach for him he moved. I was fairly certain I’d identified an easier path down for him, so after many attempts at luring him with tuna, toys, treats, and catnip, I resigned myself to the fact that he’d be there overnight.

Fergus had jumped from a small ledge on the staircase to the exposed wiring under the beams. I went to find a stepladder to reach him, but he jumped instead to an exposed beam, further into the basement, and then scrambled into the beams supporting the furnace vents.

Our first week home was good. Knowing the ‘rule of 3’ for cats, I had Fergus set up in a small bedroom with everything he’d need while he adjusted to me and his new home. He and Corbin were very curious about one another, and initial supervised interactions were going reasonably well.

It took a while to find a cat in local shelters/rescues who might be a good fit personality wise with Corbin. After a few weeks, I brought home 8 month old Fergus.

Monkey passed this past December, and after taking a few months to grieve I was ready to bring a new cat home. Corbin also seemed ready for a new companion and more social stimulation.

My first Canadian cat, Baggy, passed in 2021, and I adopted an energetic little goblin (Corbin) in Pittsburgh. Corbin immediately fell in love with the resident cat, Monkey, but the feeling wasn’t initially mutual. It took some time, but eventually they got along well, despite the 12 year age gap.

I’m a cat person, always have been. Not a surprise if you know me. The four years of undergrad are pretty much are the only time in my life I’ve not lived with at least one cat. When I moved to the USA in 2010 from NS my cats came with me, and those two same cats made multiple cross country moves
