It took weeks, or months, or more than a year for UKRI to respond to EDI concerns around lack of funding to Black researchers and bias in how doctoral funding is awarded. But this gets an response within hours - on a Saturday afternoon, no less - and promise of an immediate investigation. Shameful.

Last week my kids complained that I picked them up too early (!) and they didn’t get their after school club snack, so this week I am treating myself to a leisurely coffee first 😋

Made it to university only an hour and a half late (mostly because I gave up at New Street and got an Uber the rest of the way) but pretty sure I am never getting home 😂

Pippi is definitely the best cat!

This one actually is my cat 🐈‍⬛

Second of the day!

That’s my dogs’ bed. They don’t mind sharing it with my cat, Pippi. One problem: that’s not my cat 😂

When life gives you overripe bananas and a six year old who’s too poorly for school, make banana bread 😋

Change of plan: had to get a train to Worcester to get a train to Birmingham to get a train to University, so will arrive ~a hour and twenty minutes late, no work has been achieved, I love trains 🫠
October 6, 2023 at 9:26 AM
In today’s edition, my train to work isn’t cancelled (although my one home is) but there’s a broken down train in front of us so we’re stuck ‘for the foreseeable future’. I’m thinking positive thoughts and working on another draft 🧘
October 6, 2023 at 8:27 AM
My train to work was cancelled and the next one is in an hour so instead of stressing about the hour of training I’m missing I decided to have a nice cup of tea and read a student’s draft ☺️

Cats are the best Lego assistants, apparently

My six year old didn’t believe me when I told him it was for grown ups 😑

Bought myself a present 😃

Today I’m at a Research Fellows networking event at the Royal Society, who get +1000 points for having a quiet room set up (in addition to a separate first aid room, which I always feel bad for using). Please try and make sure you have these at your events!

New paper alert! We use CT scanning to describe the oldest-known 3D vertebrate skull, in the Ordovician (~455 million year old) jawless fish Eriptychius! Despite resembling a box of cornflakes, this fossil fills a big morphological gap between jawed and jawless fish🧪⚒️

GUESS WHAT 😂
September 20, 2023 at 2:44 PM
Kids are dropped off, I’ve got a tea, train’s on time, and a whole table to myself. Things can only get better, right?
September 20, 2023 at 8:05 AM
I obviously did not make the connection 🤪
September 12, 2023 at 10:28 AM
I’m en route to PalAss23 and I have a five minute connection at Stevenage. The train I’m on is currently running four minutes late. Will the train gods smile on me for a change? Stay tuned to find out 😂

I’m advertising a 24 month PDRA position using CT data of the jaws and skulls of Devonian-Carboniferous ray-finned fishes to investigate the first major anatomical radiation of the group. Available to start as soon as possible. 🧪⚒️

This is probably the coolest place I’ve ever stayed, although I reckon there’s now a solid 60% chance I’m going to be haunted forever 😅

I booked a last minute hotel in Lincoln through my university travel portal and there were no chains available so I’ve somehow ended up in a 14th century bail house with a four poster bed, amazing desk, terrifying chandelier and bathroom on another floor 😂
