while still wet use a silicon tool or even a gloved finger to scrape away areas you want to come back and fill in with dirt or sand.
Once the putty dries I apply mod podge with a toothpick for areas I want dirt to be then sprinkle on some Army PAinter battlefield snow.
Prime and paint.
