Competency won't make you enjoy it. But enjoying it and allowing yourself to will make you competent.

Thanks for the info! That's very reassuring to know, now I just need my foot in the door which I'm still not quite sure how to do...

Is pay that different if you go freelance? I've yet to go into job-hunting mode but if even 200k yen x month is doable via freelance that'd be awesome, because moving to Japan sounds more than a bit scary.

I feel like 20+ years in I'm still trying to figure that out

What makes us*

What makes "naturally better" at some things than others is we just... kinda do it a bunch impulsively. I wasn't always as tech-literate as I currently am, but the lack of any goal other than learning the next thing is what has made it the most painless learning experience in my life.

Art is difficult, and it's unique in the sense that it uses unique skills, but it's not uniquely difficult. Be it speedrunning, playing the sax, drawing, debating or programming, everything is unique and difficult. Art has its own challenges, but it's just as doable as anything else.

Understanding the difference logically takes a lot of thinking and reflection, and took me quite a while to get. Internalizing the difference is something that I haven't achieved myself, because it takes the undoing of many unhealthy thought patterns which have been in place forever.

That's correct, expectations don't have to be high. Expectations of any kind hurt us. We all have reasonable goals we want to reach, but chasing a goal always leads to disaster. Moving in the direction of a goal, while similar-sounding, is an astronomically different (and healthier) mindset.

This is subtle but there's two forces at play here: your skill level and the expectations themselves. Our expectations hurt us so we try to meet them, but the real underlying issue is what is CAUSING those high expectations to begin with. Higher skill is the perceived solution, but it doesn't work.

This is an incorrect assumption. Many of us have "gotten good", but getting started every day continues to be the hardest part. You might think not seeing progress is the issue, but it's actually a symptom of the real problem which, often, has nothing to do with drawing itself.

The problem many of us face is we power through our insecurities and use them as a kind of toxic fuel rather than doing the (very hard) work to develop healthy fuel; a lot of us started because we want to feel competent somewhere and thus avoid situations that would prove our current incompetence.

The biggest limiter in growth of any kind is the inability to accept your failures, make genuine attempts to course correct, and recognize and enjoy your victories however small. I say this first hand as someone who still struggles with all of those.

I don't know what to tell you, the only reason I'm still drawing is because I can see my improvement on an almost weekly or even daily basis in spite of being stubborn and lacking art peers. I don't think I'm special either, it's a matter of seeing—sometimes even feeling—where/how you've evolved.

I think this is only true if you reinterpet "results" as "you'll be good". If you work hard at something for several months, put in the effort to problem solve, do it out of genuine love and have people to accompany you in the journey, you WILL improve.

I think the jaw and facial features' movement look great! But there's many other things that stayed completely static or didn't shift perspective, more notably the hair. Despite the head moving back a little bit, the hair doesn't and instead sorta does its own thing, which hurts selling the movement

I think it's because your candle drawing just has more opportunities to "grab" people; candles aren't common things to draw, you can play with the holder, flame and candle itself, you can mold the melted wax however you want, etc. Plus the flame having a lil face adds some life and charm c:
