when i click on the free file link, theres a link in the fillable forms box that says "Use Fillable Forms", and then it shows me a page with a link that says "Start Free File Fillable Forms" and that link sent me to the filing website. i made an account and saw the file ext. option in the top left

here's a screencap of the irs page for it, you could check the irs gov website and see if the IRS Free File is intuitive or not (i think that turbotax has a request extension option but i'm not sure). or mail a form 4868 i guess.
