Autumn perennial veg action... This row of Taunton Deane kale was only planted from cuttings in spring & it's already kicking out crates of food. Meanwhile a first go with nashua creates a mound of edible vines & now flowers as well, with the tuber harvest still to come...

Lotta people feel comfortable mouthing off about those committing or suffering genocide without ever systematically obliterating an entire people or being starved, shot and blown to literal pieces...

Even (excellent) climate collapse rabble rousers & warning shouters @weareyellowdot.bsky.social have done it, and then shown a distinct failure to understand the ethical issues at stake in their replies to the many negative comments.

Not had much time to post. Meanwhile, in the propagation tunnel...

(This is at the Earthed Up! nursery and these are all perennial vegetables & other useful plants. If you want to see this craziness irl then we're open Fri & Sat, 10 til 2. Link in reply below.)

This week's new species sighting at The Pingle #organic smallholding: lots of these #dragonfly nymphs. Will be a common UK one - not sure which! The pond is teaming tho. Need to do a proper species count. Bonus water measurer at the end (easy to miss surface walker).

Managed to catch the weekend when the last of the swathes of native daffodils cross over with the first bluebells which was pretty special. One for #wildflowerhour (with apologies to @wildflowerhour.bsky.social for the lack of sepals 🙂)

Our biochar kiln just after quenching (we're in a client's garden using waste wood from their trees etc).

Maybe you need a quick look at the Earthed Up! agroecological plant nursery in the spring sunshine?
This is my first spring here & I am finally in the right place.

Alt for info.

Project: Kale Forest is GO. A year ago I wasn't a horticulturist or land worker. Now I can say: let's go BIG on perennial kale, take the cuttings (last Nov), pot them & now here are beds cleared & mulched by volunteers & 50 plants in the ground. I like this kind of "progress".

Poly tunnel newt!
A first sighting for a smooth newt up at The Pingle organic smallholding - it was very happy under a clump of Claytonia in a salad bed in the tunnel. Seeing such clear (& such cute) proof of increasing biodiversity here makes all the hard work all worthwhile 🙂

You get an idea of how ignorant & privileged the decision to end Agroforestry Research Trust's lease is from the fact that Dartington posted a shot of their head gardener literally planting a tree on Instagram 4 days ago 😒

Anyway, I fixed it for them...

Because I'm hip & know where it's at I hang out with keystone species!

I've mapped most of the wood ant nests in our local woods. They're just waking up but this one is already a frenzy of activity thanks to the particularly sunny location.
"Seething" seems appropriate.

Work outdoors they said! It'll be nice they said!
While continuing the refurbishment of the top tunnel at The Pingle yesterday we had, at various points:
sleet
warm sunshine
snow
hail
heavy rain
😬

Also made a flyer for our next night at the Feather Star in Wirksworth. I say "made" but actually I just shoddily added new info to the flyer I recycled last time we did a Pub of Dub. Saving energy by being lazy af 😋. Anyway, if you like #dub & you're in the Midlands you should come.

First day not in a garden for a week. On the train re-reading & making notes on this vital book from @rupertread.bsky.social @mandascott.bsky.social & co. If you're ready to face what's coming, leave behind old assumptions & beliefs, & roll up your sleeves, then this may well help 💚

This is NOT a gratuitous photo of my lunch. Well, maybe it is, but the point is that I've been thinking a lot about why the limited, reductionist view that small scale food growing isn't "productive" enough to be worthwhile is so wrong, & how that feeds into how science can't save us. 1/2
