Overall, it’s a nice story that both plays into tropes and spins them on their head. It’s a story about all that life thrusts unto us and human connection persisting.

And, as usual for Young, it’s a tale that has challenged me to think of mental illness differently, to learn it more thoroughly.

At the same time, it’s uniquely kind and mature with the subject matter. Our main cast does a lot to understand and comfort these symptoms, in a way that doesn’t worsen them. It’s also not afraid to show that discrimination follows labels or that there are very rarely “cures” to these afflictions.

As someone just getting into old horror movies in the last few years, it’s very refreshing to see people writing serious mental illness in a genuine and respectful manner. There’s some bone chilling depictions of it here too, but not in the “psychosis = violent” way lots of other stuff does it.

Young’s artstyle always pops out so clearly, and their fascination with the creepy scratches an itch for me. The characters are very endearing as well, and the story makes sure you know this ensemble has a lot of depth to them!

Very big summer camp friend group vibes, if that makes any sense.
