Scientist @EU_Commission's Joint Research Centre. Forests, carbon and climate in the science/policy interface. Member #IPCC task force Bureau #AR7. Views mine.
On 6–7 May 2025, a JRC-EEA workshop on Land Use Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) gathered in Ispra (IT) over 50 GHG inventory experts, scientists and policymakers.

We discussed challenges in GHG reporting and the decline of forest carbon sinks in Europe.

Thanks for the feedback on the tweet on where we stand in the climate crisis
Some saw excessive optimism. Don't forget: the figure is an analogy, for illustrative purposes.
Others asked to reuse and edit. Here it is (slightly re-edited after comments

Communicating the climate crisis to non-experts is difficult. Here I tried to illustrate in a simple way where we stand and where we are heading.

I love the cover of the UNEP emissions gap report.
It tells everything about the current climate crisis, the short time we have, and the extent of the challenge.
Happy to have worked on chapter 2 (Global emissions trends) with @lamb_wf and others

JRC LULUCF workshop 2022
55 participants in presence and 70 online, sharing challenges, questions and best practices on reporting GHG emissions and removals in land use and forestry in Europe.
Thanks @matteo_vizzarri and colleagues for great support

Historic moment:
kickoff of technical part of the #GlobalStocktake

Critical step to implement the #ParisAgreement

Based on the best available science, the collective climate progress will be assessed, with the aim to
trigger additional efforts towards a safer future

After two weeks of intense work, the landmark @IPCC_CH WGIII report has been approvedGreat work of hundreds of authors
Proud of having contributed on land CO2 flux numbers, helping to understand & reconcile large differences among datasets

Different ways to assess the anthropogenic forest sink hampers an accurate assessment of collective climate progress under the Paris Agreement.
Adjusting what 'science says' on land mitigation pathways improves this assessment.

A study led by @lucia_perugini, that I co-authored along with @ciais_philippe, @Peters_Glen et al, explains how science can contribute to the emerging reporting/ verification needs under Paris.

If you can't measure it, you can't improve it: no good decisions without good data!

4/7 How was the message misunderstood?
Many critics claimed that these results are “impossible” and contradict country statistics. That’s untrue, mostly due to misunderstandings and incorrect apple-to-orange comparison.

(7/7) The translation works well. This adjustment lowers the IAMs’ anthropogenic emissions (now matching NGHGIs) but also the cumulative allowable global emissions to reach <<2C. This may affect the countries’ perception of the level of global net emissions they need to achieve.
January 20, 2025 at 9:54 PM
(6/7) Given this difference, which approach is right? Right or wrong is not the right question, the point is that they are not comparable. And the Global stocktake requires comparability. Since changing NGHGIs is impractical, our study “translates” the results from IAMs.
January 20, 2025 at 9:54 PM
(5/7) IAMs and NGHGIs use different approaches to estimate the ‘anthropogenic’ land CO2 sink. The difference (5.5 GtCO2/y) is big enough to complicate the assessment by the Paris Agreement’s Global stocktake of the collective country progress vs. what science suggests as needed.
January 20, 2025 at 9:53 PM
(4/7) Let’s start with the context, putting the Paris Agreement inside a car. The actors are the policy makers, the National GHG inventories (NGHGIs) and the Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs
