National Cancer Survivors Day June 1, 2025 I was diagnosed the first time in 1996. Recurrence in 2001. I stayed on Herceptin every 3 weeks after a year of chemotherapy and 30 days of radiation. In 2012, they decided I was cured, so they took me off the IVs, and of course, it came back. Metastatic cancer never goes away; it just lies dormant until it rears its ugly head again. More chemotherapy, which was the worst of them all. I had welts all over, even on my eyelids, which would bleed down into my eyes. I gained a lot of weight from the steroids. After several cycles of chemotherapy, the cancer played nice, and I have been able to just have Herceptin and Perjeta every 3 weeks since 2014. My life is filled with doctor visits, blood tests, heart scans, CT scans, and, when insurance allows, PET scans. I have developed severe neuropathy and many autoimmune diseases, but I am alive. I have been able to watch my kids grow up and now have grandchildren. I still love life.
