Retired book editor, terminal bookworm, soon to be first-time author with THE INSIDER: MALCOLM COWLEY AND THE TRIUMPH OF AMERICAN LITERATURE. I like movies too.
You absolutely don't need to be Irish Catholic to savor the quiet genius of Alice McDermott, her novels are universally human. But if you ARE IRC, oh my, oh my, oh my. As in, wait, what is MY family doing in YOUR book? #AliceMcDermott

Charles Ludlam, the genius behind the Ridiculous Theatrical Company, photographed by Peter Hujar in his apartment at 55 Morton Street in the Village. I lived on the same floor there as Ludlam and Everett Quinton for three years, a memory I cherish.

Found it! A little the worse for wear, but I'm sure Honey Ryder and, blush, Pussy Galore won't mind.

Are there any other William Irwin Thompson fans out there? This book hit my brain with real impact in the, ahem, spiritually confused early seventies; his later work, esp. THE TIME FALLING BODIES TAKE TO LIGHT opened my mind up in intriguing ways. A truly Big Thinker.

Can anyone tell me with any degree of certainty whether this is an actual post on Truth Social? If it is, the penultimate sentence is jaw-dropping, even by Trump standards.

Thank you for your attention to this matter (if I may . . .).

Attention inventory managers: time for a big new printing in anticipation of demand. Also, a smart publisher might consider retitling their Conan Doyle collections THE DOG THAT DIDN'T BARK.

Just finished this terrific novel, NYRB Classics does it again. A book that makes you ask the question, is the curated life is worth living, or when did reality take on the aspect of an Instagram face? Has the clear and inescapable logic of a perfect syllogism.

The Night of the Living Political Dead continues. He can't imagine a world in which he isn't somehow in charge.

More to the point, what if Ross Douthat went out with a whimper?

The late and very great Native American novelist and poet James Welch (WINTER IN THE BLOOD, FOOLS CROW,etc.) was one of the best writers and nicest people I ever worked with. I miss him very badly.

A "vintage" coaster from the well-loved sports bar just off Times Square, amazingly still in business. We threw a great pub party in 1998 for Geoffrey O'Brien's delirious TIMES SQUARE STORY, and I can hardly remember ever being happier than during and after.
