![Surprisingly, Browne turns in his consideration of the possible sexual variance of hares to a concept readily legible in our own moment as the sign of gender variance: "trans." In a single paragraph, Browne uses the words "transition," "transmutation," "transformation," "transfiguration," and, twice, "transplantation" (147). In fact, Browne finds "trans" so useful to think with that he coins two new trans words-the verbal noun "transexion" and the verbal adjective "transfeminated"-to which he makes recourse when discussing the theory that hares are not hermaphrodites, but that, instead, they change sexes back and forth each year. In order to refute these claims about the "iterated transexion of Hares," Browne calls on other medical authorities who had investigated supposed "transexions" in persons assumed to be women who had miraculously transformed into men.4 These physicians, Browne claims, "affirm that transmutation of sex is only so in opinion, and that these transfeminated persons were really men at first, although succeeding years produced the manifesto or evidence of their virilities" (148). On this account, it is not that these women transitioned into men, but that they had always been men-that they were born that way-and that their bodily transformations merely affirmed the person they had always been, "producing] the manifesto" of their manhood. I do not think you are responding in a fair way to the issue that I keep bringing up, and which was my original reason for replying: this completely unfair strawman which also oddly presumes that penicillin "only helps the well-off"

this post here is what I was replying to. it is completely unfair to claim that people who assume immortality technology is an elite pursuit are equivalent to this-- especially when the most prominent pursuers of immortality are billionaires
