I was thinking the seismometers would all be DC?

"I still love you, the face from Mars."

Yes, of course!

Fair enough, everything that far down is definitely a bit mushy.

My inner tectonic geodesist says it is safer to say displacement is permanent, not deformation. Deformation implies strain, which in an elastic rheology should be recoverable. But faults tend to slip in one direction, so the displacements from those go in one direction too.

Some of my students have led the writing of proposals that did get funded (by the USGS or SCEC, with me as PI), and I encourage them to claim ownership of those. But I don't think it should be a requirement for jobs, as not everybody will have had that opportunity. (I certainly didn't!)

I think we have enough information to estimate a propagation direction (north to south) and a rupture speed. Early phase of rupture was over 20 km/s by my reckoning (3x the P-wave speed!) which is a record, as far as I know!

That would explain why my colleagues from UCR and UCLA had their phones go off early too!

Crazy! We had a pretty stacked agenda in our meeting today (and catering!) so I probably wouldn't have been able to get away for long. We did manage to fit in a minute or two of time under the conference table though... and we briefly discussed early warning apps and why Lucy Jones is always on TV!

My phone went off in Oakland, one minute ahead of time! (ShakeOut early warning?)
October 16, 2025 at 7:21 PM
And we did it! I was able to explain to my committee colleagues why we drop, cover and hold on!

I don't think so. I think he's on LinkedIn though and it's not too hard to find his email address.
