Yes! the principle of charity seems at best methodologically appropriate in a philosophy seminar room (= when evaluating positions in light of all available evidence), but not when we’re trying to explain humans’ actual behavior, like a historian, psychologist, sociologist, or JOURNALIST should

Plus, if one political party repeatedly uses you as a punching bag to score political points, you’ll be more inclined to support that party’s opponents
