How do Bacteroides thrive in the mammalian intestine? Like plants, they drive glycolysis using pyrophosphate rather than ATP to make fructose-1,6-bisphosphate. Unlike most other bacteria, the ATP-dependent enzymes are completely dispensable for cell growth and instead direct a master regulator.
