I have a funny "curse" where I seem unable to ever catch the males in sexually dimorphic species. I honestly find the subtle coloring of females more striking and interesting.

As expected, the female builder was highly repeatable in the construction of the cup lining between nesting attempts!

However, it was the identity and dimensions of the box cavity that explained the structure of the nest.

We measured and dissected over 100 nests to examine differences in dimensions and material counts. Nests were just as variable as we expected!

One nest contained nearly 1500 sticks while another contained less than 200!

During my first research experience, I noticed that house wren nests are remarkably variable! I became determined to understand why this variability existed and wondered if birds are ever repeatable in the structure and make-up of their nests.
