He's been watching too much BBC recently. This is exactly how many of their impartial "Experts" (read as right-wing goons) talk about any kind of benefits in the UK.

My experience is that university administrations are understaffed and overburdened, resulting in the prioritising of major projects. Smaller projects are delayed as they keep getting pushed to the back of priority queues. By the time you get the MOU or whatever is needed, the timeliness has passed

I've read many an article developed from generic court reporting (most of the sleepsex press articles were traced back to one local journo who was in court). They are normally low-skilled and low paid and then other journos have to produce a story from that briefing. No wonder quality is low.

"It's DNA, it's ridiculous numbers, it has to be true!!!" That there is no understanding of context is deplorable. Unfortunately, a recent media briefing I was at did not give me hope. Journalists are worried about losing their jobs to AI, so this kind of contextless pap will only get worse.

"Gloves found in a person's flat have enormous probability of belonging to them" Shocker! Cannot see from this report how those gloves are connected to the crime scene. Poor reporting, poor expert testimony or a bit of both?

And they wonder why we're so opposed to ID cards! The State does not have the bureaucracy and infrastructure for it, and cases like this prove that.

I think the report says Murphy was taking a private legal action against Sheffield Hallam based on the free speech legislation, so, no I don't expect OfS to do anything, but that a researcher was empowered to act against their cowardly institution I see as a good thing.

Just had to confirm that my UKRI review did not use AI (including spellchecker, grammatical correction). I can confirm, all typos are my own work!

Growing up in South Wales, nearly every woman I met was called "Aunty", some of them weren't even blood relatives - shocker!

My 6 year old neice might be getting a full Rumi (is that the right name) costume, including purple wig, from Uncle Santa this year. Defintely not a cheap phase!

About two-three months. Started summer 2024 and ran a marathon with my wife pretty comfortably in October 2024. Have run my first ultramarathon this year, dropped my Half PB by 3mins and, hopefully a new marathon PB this weekend.

Heel raises have been my biggest change this year. Had a bad case of achilles tendonopathy last year (very nearly a tear) and physio had me doing all kinds of heel raises (on a stair), double and single leg. Now do about 60 a session and achilles and calf are much stronger.

Reminds me of when @deecooke.bsky.social and I lived in Edinburgh. Dee wanted humane traps (largely high-pitched audio) and I could swear that one day I saw a mouse perform The Macarena to it. After that, resorted to good, old fashioned poison.

I think it might be the scattershot approach of the advertising (for instance, why are they on my Facebook feed, I don't even live in Scotland?). I wonder if more thought could have been placed on where information should be provided. Where it would be most effective.

Instead we should be "fighting" the epidemic of VAWG at every turn and showing men (of all ages) that GBV (in all its forms) is unacceptable. As I say, while informing is important, this feels more like normalisation and I fear that will have unintended consequences.

My ambivalence derives from the normalisation of Gender and Sexual Based Violence and not as something that should be challenged and contested at every turn. Sure, there are those who rightly say that violence is normal for women and girls, but this seems to me the wrong response...
