Even within the servant class, there were marked social differences that depended on a variety of factors. Some of these could be variable (e.g. employer favoritism), others were reinforced by the community (e.g. servants with ties to local families were generally better protected than strangers).

Ever wondered why commoners did not rise up more often? Mainly because the “common people” were not a homogeneous group. Merchants did not consider themselves the same as peddlers. No farmer or craftsman would make common cause with his employees and they in turn felt superior to the day laborers.
