Highly recommend Colum McCann’s Twist about connection, rupture & repair in human relationships but also centring on the vulnerability of subsea fibre optic cables that carry so much of our daily affairs around the world. Beautifully articulated, published by @bloomsburybooksuk.bsky.social

Delighted to be asked to speak to secondary school students in Waterford last Thursday alongside Ireland's youngest City & County Councillor Kate O'Mahony on the theme of spotting and fighting online disinformation in politics. Energy from students was fantastic & the questions were great!

Hugely recommend The Best Of Everything by @kitdewaal.com Wonderful characterisation and compassion, such empathy for a range of characters. There is a particular kind of solace and inspiration to be found in a novel as good as this.

I was delighted to take part in a fascinating panel discussion on Global Horizons with @stephenkinsella.bsky.social @howardemma.bsky.social Barry Doyle, Mayor Greg Ballard & expertly chaired by Mark Redmond, as part of the Kennedy Summer School & Wexford Chamber & Wexford Council. Great engagement.

A graphic illustration of how Putin has been emboldened by Trump's resumption of the presidency - a massive increase in missile and drone launches from Russia on Ukraine, including in the hours before the 'peace' talks last week.

Looking forward to this at the New Ross Kennedy Summer School with @stephenkinsella.bsky.social & @howardemma.bsky.social Greg Ballard (former Mayor of Indianapolis), Barry Doyle of Johnson Hana, chaired by Mark Redmond, former CEO of American Chamber in Ireland. Web www.kennedysummerschool.ie

I cannot recommend highly enough 38 Londres Street by @philippesands.bsky.social Breathtaking, chilling conclusion to his exquisitely written & researched trilogy weaving the personal, political & legal legacies of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet & Nazi Walther Rauff. Astonishing & compelling.

Remarkable graph from @nytimes.com showing that the dollar has had the worst first six months of the year since 1973. The Art of the Deal.

Best book title of the year so far has to be The Haves and Have-Yachts by @eosnos.bsky.social a collection of New Yorker essays detailing the excesses and warped realities of the super rich, fuelling the inequalities at the heart of the current American malaise. A portrait of an undeniable oligarchy

Really enjoyed The Seventh Floor by David McCloskey, an excellent mole hunt spy thriller by an ex CIA operative that is very on point and well informed. Well paced and engagingly written. @swiftpress.bsky.social

Perhaps the JCPOA was a pretty effective tool and Trump pulling out of a multilateral deal was perhaps not the greatest example of the art of the deal?

Highly recommend @donnachadcu.bsky.social Unfinished Empire pub’d by @agendapub.bsky.social Clear eyed & perceptive contextual analysis of Russian imperialism, fascinating tour thru Ukraine, Caucasus, Moldova & Belarus. I heartily recommend The Secret Life of Leinster House by @gavreilly.com A very readable & accessible, kaleidoscopic view on the practice of politics in Ireland, sympathetic to the practitioners, their frustrations & work/life balance, and a handy anecdote about why few male TDs don’t use the gym.

Not all heroes wear capes but a lot work in the US Government. Michael Lewis edits a dazzling new collection of essays from @thewashingtonpost.bsky.social tracing the unsung exploits of those currently being maligned by Trump & Musk. A must read for any student of politics & public service.

If you’re looking for a great read, Glorious Exploits by Ferdia Lennon is a remarkably assured debut novel that is set in Sicily in 400BC about two Dublin accented locals who use Athenian prisoners to stage two Greek plays in a quarry. A mad premise but it really works.
