✏️ Instead, participants engaged in an active cost–benefit calculus: expression decreased when social costs felt higher (especially with low anonymity), and increased when perceived benefits were perceived as high.

✏️ In a one-week field experiment with 960 participants (48 discussion groups with 20 discussants each, covering three different political topics), we found no simple main effects of anonymity or persistence on political expression.

✏️ Competing theories suggest these features could either discourage political expression (due to social risks) or encourage it (by increasing efficacy and confidence).
