I have mixed feelings about the story. It’s a great allegory of unselfish love (by the tree) but I can also see how it could imply that someone should agree unhesitatingly to demands that are excessive and harmful to the giver.

Hard to know. Aging is known to be a factor in some people’s hardened positions concerning viewpoints and biases.
