I live in Cauca, Colombia, in a village of 1800 in the Colombian Andes. It's the only place I've ever felt at home.

Some of our smaller birds: a Short-Crested Flycatcher, a Yellow Warbler, a Slate-Throated Redstart, and a Yellow-Throated Tyrannulet, all about 4.5 inches. Cauca is entering the rainy season, which affects bird ranges and behaviors. We should have some northern migrants arriving soon.

The Yellow-headed Caracara is a type of falcon, 20-24 inches in length. It feeds on easily caught prey and scavenges. It prefers high, clear perches and calls loudly to establish its presence. Colombia is the best place on earth for birdwatching.

The Green Jay is a social and vocal bird usually seen in groups moving through fruit tree groves. Here's one in our patio guayaba tree at breakfast time in Tunia, Cauca, our village of 1800 in the Colombian Andes.

A good day for butterflies in Tunia.

We had a festival of marching bands today in Tunia. Youth bands from Caldono, Silvia, Piendamo, Popayan, Santander de Quilichao, Tunia, and other communities marched in front of our house and around town-plenty of proud parents, and much joyful noise. Thank you, Colombia!
