i can't think of any magical girl content I've seen where the ability to transform is tied to something so concretely - normally it's like a "one and done" (ie contract) or inherent thing they have. Wonder why that differs to tokusatsu?

ohh yeah, Gibson is basically the godfather of cyberpunk aesthetics. a ton of the books terminology is lifted wholesale as a glossary for the whole genre.
also fun fact, Hackers (1995) calls their macguffin The Gibson as a reference to aforementioned.

yeah! the unique cinematic style was what really sold me on the series, so even though I know most people prefer the more traditional style I was pretty disappointed to see the new direction. not objectively worse, but definitely less engaging for me personally
