Would you like some speculative evolution?

In this alternative history of life, Asgard archaea died, but giant sulfur bacteria evolved into multicellular eukaryote-like life 🧪🦠

AI helped me to visualize this imaginary world 💻

It's #BiologyWeek now, but I am posting a photo of mine out of a working environment — because I am no longer in academia.

But I am still a freelance science communicator, my computational research project in microbial biology is going on — thus still #IAmABiologist!

For #InternationalMicroorganismDay, I would like to highlight my favourite microbes – the main characters of my blog about evolution of multicellularity 🦠

They have something in common: all of them tell us something about the nature of multicellularity itself 🧪

Read the thread! 🧵⬇️

This is my poster from MCCMB conference which I attended recently 🧪🦠🌳

I tried to make it interactive, graphical, and vivid :-)
QR codes, shortDOIs are at your service, as Mr. Peeve Pathogen ad Mr. Smiling Symbiont do. Hope you will like them — as well as the work itself :-)

Would you like some infographics on the phylogeny of steroid 5-alpha reductases and their emergence in plants and vertebrates?
🌳🦠🧪🦕
This is my poster from #ISMBECCB2025 conference (by @iscb.bsky.social). It is now available on F1000Research and fully citable:

Steroid 5-alpha reductase is one of the important pharmacological target in humans 🧪💊
But the same enzyme powers the steroid biosynthesis in plants🌳🌷
How did this similarity originate and evolve?
Let's discuss this under my virtual poster at ISMB-ECCB 2025!

Despite submission to about ten journals and peer-review services, I have failed to publish my preprint 🧪
I have decided to keep it available and active as a preprint to use it in further reviews and comments.
The explainer blog post is coming soon!

Discovery of Thiomargarita magnifica urges us to pay additional attention to the giant sulfur bacteria and to revisit our recent bioinformatic finding of lipoxygenases in the representatives of the genus Beggiatoa 🧪

Last year, I contributed to the article in IJMS on lipoxygenases in infection and carcinogenesis 🧪

I added data from my research about the possible association of lipoxygenases with infection in cystic fibrosis, cross-kingdom host jumps, and neoplastic conditions

This autumn's creepy season is in full play, and it's time to post an appropriate art 🎃🦇

Of course, the central Halloween symbol is a pumpkin, but for me, the most important constituent of the autumn vibe is physalis, also known as Chinese lantern

Today, the International Day of Peace is celebrated. Now, this day and its idea are especially important.
I still stand for peace as I did before. I believe peace will once come — and it will be based on tolerance, equity, and justice.
Let's pray for this.

@pubpeer.bsky.social, maybe, you will react to two my emails to the support team?
Or you prefer to keep barring the publication author from discussing his own preprint just because he has no appropriate institutional email?

I am now testing the AI engine by Mind The Graph 🧠
Meet two examples of the AI generations for my research 🧪

You can see "bacteria jumping from plants to a patient" and "bacteria jumping from a banana to a human". I will include them into a new text post on my project. Stay tuned!
