With that in mind, we devised 4 recommendations for best practice in future studies of WM-cognition relationships in BD, because there's still value in exploring these links between brain & behaviour - to better understand functional nuances & inform therapeutic approaches!

Importantly, this review also highlights some major methodological limitations across the literature; inconsistent tract-domain selections, small sample sizes & minimal consideration of BD clinical characteristics made it tricky to delineate robust from spurious findings

This finding aligns with existing knowledge beyond BD, that the corpus callosum plays a crucial role in maintaining interhemispheric connectivity and integrating key skills in processing speed, attention and psychomotor coordination

The majority of the literature tested WM microstructure, taking whole brain and tract-specific approaches. Across these, some consistent relationships emerged, with corpus callosum-complex attention associations the most prominent

It was earlier studies that explored links between cognition and WM macrostructural morphologies. But no single cognitive domain was repeatedly associated with WM volumes, hyperintensities or thickness in BD

We found that all 37 studies were cross-sectional and varied substantially in both their neuroimaging and neuropsychological methods. This has resulted in so many different WM-cognition combinations being studied, that consistent patterns of findings were pretty limited

In this paper, we synthesised findings from the 37 studies that have explored white matter-cognition relationships in BD to date. This has been a pretty prolific area of interest, but a comprehensive overview of the nature & extent of these relationships was overdue!
