If you are like me, and you have a teenage girl, I present to you breaking news: Garage is coming to M St. That is a meaningless message to me. And it may be meaningless to you too. But to many a teenage girl, this is a coveted clothing shop. And with its arrival, trips out to Tyson's Corner become all that less necessary (by "necessary" I mean necessary by the standards of a teenager, not a normal human being.)

Breakfast with Santa will be returning to Volta Park this December 6th. Here are the details!: One of our favorite events will be returning on December 6th to the Volta Basketball Courts. Join us between 10am-12pm and enjoy the holiday cheer with friends and neighbors. Bring the whole family, including your four-legged fur babies, for the Santa Experience ($20) which includes: sitting with Santa (*parents will take their own photo), festive crafts, doughnuts, coffee/hot chocolate and new this year – live DJ music and face painting!

Two new stores are on the horizon for Georgetown, at least according to this month's Old Georgetown Board submissions. The first is the international brand Uniqlo. They have long been rumored to be looking for a location in Georgetown, and it appears they have found one. The sign application indicates that they are aiming to take over the recently vacated J Crew location on M St.

Last month, a Swedish company gave a demonstration of a boat they make designed with a hydrofoil hull. The company says it hopes to one day use this technology for a water ferry on the Potomac to Georgetown. While this is an impressive display, there are reasons to remain skeptical that we'll see hydrofoil ferries anytime soon pulling up on the dock.

The public high school designated for Georgetown is in the process of receiving its official name, one that will be familiar to many in the neighborhood: John Thompson Jr. High School. The high school, which was established by DC in the fall of 2023 and occupies the former Georgetown Day School on MacArthur Blvd. in the Palisades, is the in-boundary high school for Georgetown students.

Georgetown is down to two Starbucks again. The location at M and 34th has closed. Several aspects of our supremely screwed up national politics are likely to result in some gummed up construction projects around Georgetown in the near future. Some delays have already taken hold, and more are possible depending on how things move in the near future. Here's why: Every construction project in Georgetown is required to be sent to the Old Georgetown Board for review and approval prior to the permit being issued.

Book Hill Construction Proposal This month, the city finally presented some conceptual proposals for the improvements budgeted for Book Hill Park. This week for Georgetown Time Machine, I'm sharing another photo from the DC Historical Society. It's of the canal at a time when it was still a functional canal. According to the record, the photo was taken sometime between 1910 and 1920. You can see the old Aqueduct Bridge in the distance, which places the location up the river a bit from Georgetown.

A new coffee shop appears to be coming to 1363 Wisconsin Ave. It is called YellowSun Coffee, not to be confused with Yellow (although given the later's wild popularity, I'm sure it's a confusion the former wouldn't mind stoking.) YellowSun Coffee is based in New York City, and apparently specializes in coffee bean home delivery. It only has one store according to its website (located in Bushwick, Brooklyn).

This has been a dry and hot fall so far, which is not great for fall foliage. But what ever sort of fall display we'll get is about to arrive. So here is my annual guide on how best to enjoy the fall foliage around Georgetown: Fall foliage is a little late this year in Georgetown due to the warmer days.

After an initial burst of activity for the Volta Park ballpark renovations, many residents have noticed that the construction has been on pause for weeks. This has led to a bunch of speculation and rumor. The most frequent thing I have heard from residents is suspicions that they uncovered some human remains. Since the park was once a cemetery, and many remains are estimated to remain, I have not heard anything to substantiate that.

So when I saw that Ikea is planning on opening a store in Georgetown, I assumed it was another case of mistaken Georgetown.

This week for Georgetown Time Machine, I'm exploring another photo from the DC Historical Society. This one is a a shot looking westward along the canal between what we now call 31st St. and Wisconsin Ave. I say "what we now call" because the information for the photo identifies the location as "C&O Canal at 32nd St." That is what Wisconsin Ave.

Last Wednesday, the Department of Parks and Recreation hosted a community meeting to discuss the next steps in the project to improve Book Hill Park. The meeting was attended by about twenty members of the public, most of whom are either involved with the Friends of Book Hill Park or live nearby. The presentation, included below, described some of the elements that the planners are considering for the project.

This is why there were so many helicopters around Tuesday night. I can confirm, that was the longest ANC meeting I've ever either participated or even observed.

A lot of Georgetowners want to learn more about the history of their homes. Assuming the house is actually old, there are several places you can look to find that history. Many know that the Peabody Room at the library maintains a separate file on each house in the neighborhood. Some also know that with a library card, you can access the digital archives of the Post and the defunct Evening Star to see if your address has popped up on their pages.

This week for Georgetown Time Machine, I'm exploring another photo from the DC Historical Society. It is of an unidentified church at an unknown location. The only thing the record can say is that it's in Georgetown and from between 1895 to 1905. I love a challenge like this, so I jumped right into trying to figure out which church this is and where.
