Surveys are still being completed for the December 28 tornado outbreak, but at least 1735 tornadoes have been confirmed in 2024. This is the 2nd most tornadoes on record behind 2004 (1817 tornadoes)

A WHOLE LOT OF STINGRAYS! Beautiful sight on Pensacola Beach , Florida

Stingrays are flat, bottom-dwelling fish with broad fins and sharp-tailed barbs for defense. They are cartilaginous, meaning they have cartilage instead of bones, and are closely related to sharks.

The satellites NOAA uses to track hurricanes are extremely high resolution. This image was taken by the Copernicus Sentinel 2 satellite that’s roughly 500 miles above the Earth. The resolution is so good you can actually see white caps on the surface of the ocean…from space!

Synchronous fireflies last night

This is 30 5-second exposures from last night, combined into one image. I was in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and it was the largest swarm of synchronous fireflies I’ve had the pleasure of observing.

May 15th was the 1st day of forecasting of hurricane season from NHC This product is updated at approximately 2 AM, 8 AM, 2 PM, & 8 PM EDT from May 15 - November 30, with special outlooks issued at any time as conditions warrant.
