Think of power broadly. Power is more than the size of your membership. It is the time, money, and relationships members are willing to risk. Power is the relationships the organization has forged, the funds it has raised, the capacities created.

A building of unorganized tenants is at the mercy of the property owner. Organized, they could refuse to pay rent and become a force to be reckoned with.

Potential power is everywhere. Ten thousand unorganized people ripped off by payday lenders are individual victims, completely disconnected. Organized, they are a power bloc that could challenge and change the industry.

We organize to transform potential power into actual power. Potential power exists in a neighborhood, within a class, workplace, or political district, but until organized into a force that can act as one, it’s all untapped potential.

Power is the ability to marshal forces—people, money, and ideas—to move things. It is something many of us are taught to fear, a force used against us. Power is neutral; it can be used for good or evil. We build it to be held by large groups of people who want justice for themselves and others too.
