Absolutely enamored by what I received in a plant swap as Hippeastrum leonardii, but several knowledgeable people have indicated might be H. menesesii instead.

Cyrtanthus falcatus, a South African amaryllid with large, above-ground bulbs, deciduous leaves, and distinctive crook in the inflorescence. Flowers are usually orange but this clone is consistently greenish/yellowish. It took 8 years to start flowering but now is reliable in March/April. 🌱 🌴

And this year I accidentally watered the Sprekelia formosissima early, so I have giant alien flower in March instead of May. 🌱 🌴

Plant alphabet day 23:

W is for Worsleya procera (Empress of Brazil), a fantastic amaryllid with elongated above-ground bulb that grows on granite slopes near Rio de Janeiro. Purchased as a tiny offset in 2013. I’m hoping I won’t have to wait another decade for flowers. 1/2 🌱 🌴

I haven't repotted this Gasteria since 2016. Had to smash the pot to get it out

It may be deep winter but it seems churlish to complain when we have the Hippeastrum aulicum and calanthe orchids in flower.

Moir et al. (2025) asked how pollinators drive geographic floral divergence in Brunsvigia gregaria with a generalist pollination system. Style length correlates with the body length of locally important pollinators, highlighting their critical role in floral evolution. #Ecology
