Maybe the class of '21 who jumped right into PhD programs are doing well—I certainly hope so!—but it feels like those with gaps are having it particular rough.

Having to leave research even further behind while focusing on helping my grandmother who raised me pass, and now my coursework Master's (yeah, I know now) is finishing up and it feels like there aren't many opportunities for research assistant roles—although that might just be imperfect searches.

My own journey was greatly disrupted by COVID—your lab effectively being inoperable 2 weeks after you joined it as an undergrad will do that—and then I had a rocky start with a poor-fit research assistant role (NSF funded!).
