Many who were never part of the initial Hamas atrocities, and probably didn't support them were driven to take up arms when they saw IDF troops killing their kinfolk and destroying their homes. It's a vicious cycle.

If you throw rocks at the IDF soldiers about to shoot members of your family does that make you a Hamas fighter? The line between combatants and civilians is not so clear as you suggest.
