This is an entry for the 3rd day of #mathober2025 (polyhedron) and also the 1st day (link). It is a variation on a rhombicuboctahedron with a projection of the Borromean Rings. #mathober #mathsky

This jumbo size dandelion is called a salsify, to the best of my knowledge. The tiny broom is a single seed. The “heart” has Fibonacci spirals. Could the spherical looking flower be a spherical Fibonacci mapping? Seen in North Rim, Grand Canyon NP. #mathsky #Fibonacci

My most recent homage to #eggs— the bottom is half of an icosidodecahedron, and the top is part of a rhombicosidodecahedron. #mathsky #edusky #mathart

It's #NationalQuiltingMonth ! What better time to incorporate math teaching and quilting.

Celebrating #nationalquiltingmonth with two classic quilting blocks: the Sawtooth Star and Dutchman’s Puzzle. Geometiles allow you to create these patterns quickly so that you can focus on their geometry even if you don’t know how to sew. See Geometiles.com/quilts for examples. #mathsky #edusky

Celebrating this year’s Pi(e) Day with this fluted number! It comes with its own pie stand, made for the occasion. Watch video to see how two flat surfaces come together to make the pie— or should I say PIElyhedron?? Mobies make the thin pedestal of the pie stand possible. #mathsky #piday2025

Wait for it… this 7 yr old is discovering a new way to play with Geometiles. He’s treating the chain of rectangles as a multi-hinge system, and he finds it “satisfying” to experience the system unfold from a triangle to various other shapes under the effect of gravity. #edusky #mathsky #iteachmath

This #BlackHistoryMonth I’ve been looking at the origins of African American crafts. The pattern in the first picture is inspired by Kente cloth. The cube design is based on the zigzag pattern often seen in African art. #mathsky #mathart #mathematicalart

Mirrored triacontahedron (30-faces) at the @byltbasics.bsky.social store at the local mall. This solid was discovered by Johannes Kepler. It is dual to the icosidodecahedron. #mathsky #mathart

The last day of the Joint Math Meetings is always bittersweet because that’s when I get to interact with really young mathematicians, but not nearly for as long as I’d like. 9 yr old boy with an elegant structure he designed on his own; girl discovering the #hattile. #jmm2025 #mathsky #edusky

Kudos to David Weed, of UC Riverside, for winning the coffee bean contest at #JMM2025 ! One of the yellow tetrahedra had 93 coffee beans, and his guess for the number of beans in the green one was 205, just 1 over the correct number. V(green)=2 V(yellow) by Cavalieri’s principle.

Still catching my breath after the opening reception at the #JMM2025. This star summarizes my experience: raucous geeky fun. Thank you to the person who made this— you’re the first person to build this shape.

At the #jmm2025 ? Try our coffee bean estimating contest before you leave the opening reception.

If you're planning to attend
#JMM2025 next week, stop by Booth 331 for a view of the Space Needle and to participate in our Seattle themed estimation challenge. We'll be next to the Math Art Exhibit, where you can see my piece "Full Circles". #mathart #mathematicalart #mathsky

Just in time for #chanukah2024 , here is an easy to make Geometiles Dreidel. It’s made of eight 30-60-90 triangles and four right isosceles triangles. You need to improvise your own handle for spinning it — I just glued together 4 coffee stirrers. #mathsky #iteachmath #iteachphysics
