Our Virginia Native Plant Garden throughout the year
Monarch butterflies visiting our Appalachian blazing star (Liatris squarrulosa). This seems to be one of their favorites as I find them daily on this plant. #nativeplants.

An overview of our modified native prairie plantings, this is year 3 for this plot of natives and everything is really thriving, self seeding and spreading by rhizomes this year. Unfortunately due to work issues this is our last summer with this house and I will miss it dearly. #nativeplants

Last #nativebloom of the day is Culver's root (Veronicastrum virginicum). A very unique bloom that stands out and just looks cool, I always think of a 🔱.

Our first ever #nativebloom of Garden phlox (Phlox paniculata). This is my favorite of the phlox family. We have 10-15 of these in the gardens but this is our first bloom.

A very early #nativebloom for a random patch of Smooth blue aster (Symphyotrichum laeve). This one seeded itself under our steeplebush. This aster is a late blooming plant, usually when it starts to cool at night in late summer, early fall.

Swamp rose mallow, Hibiscus moscheutos first bloom of the year. Each magnificent bloom is only open for one day but there are so many blooms and they are fabulous. If you have a damp spot in your yard or a rain garden these are a must have!

A very cool spider hanging out on our purple Echinacea.

One of our many swamp rose mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos) with its first bloom of the season. If you have wet/damp/swampy spots in your yard or a rain garden this is an amazing #native to filter the run off and look good doing it. #Nativebloom.

This morning we have our Allegheny Monkeyflower (Mimulus ringens) putting on a show mid garden.
June 24, 2025 at 12:27 PM
Asclepias verticillata, the whorled milkweed, blooming. This was a new addition last season and it exploded throughout a 5-10 foot radius. #NativeBlooms. Another host for Monarchs if you want to vary your planting to support their journey.

Purple Echinacea coming into full bloom in our yard this morning. #NativeBloom

Elderberry in full bloom, these were planted in fall 2023 as tiny little sticks, an absolute amazing #NativeBloom in a very short amount of time. If you are looking for a plant to fill a space that isn't an alien I love these.

Common Milkweed in full bloom out in the garden. Did some staged planting to see if we could get the Milkweed to bloom at several different times this summer. #NativeBlooms

Black Swallowtail stopping by to see a purple Echinacea in our yard today.

Purple coneflower, Echinacea purpurea, in full bloom in our front #native garden. These are one of my favorites, they have a lot of personality and I love seeing 100s of downward facing purple blooms. We have about another week until they are all in full bloom. Fun and easy to start from seed!
June 21, 2025 at 12:13 PM
Orange coneflower (Rudbeckia fulgida) blooming in the early morning. These aren't my favorite but I do appreciate their summer long blooms and self seeding abilities.
June 21, 2025 at 12:10 PM
Another late season #native planting this year, Spotted beebalm (Monarda punctata) with a nice bloom.
June 20, 2025 at 11:43 AM
This was a late planting this year so I'm happy to see a baby bloom from our Celandine poppy (Stylophorum diphyllum).
