I came to London for a meeting early this morning that got cancelled last minute! These things happen. I’ve filled the time with other meetings w/ folk who have made time for me. I visited @theguardian.com offices (cool!) and I’ve been sampling tempura crab #Tacos. #Taqueria pion #Clerkenwell win.

Cute #cat photo for a windy, rainy day.

I’ve been rebuilding my deck to include a bit of #edible #green (and make room for all the bl**dy bins we now have). Not quite finished, but getting there.

Today I am mostly exploring a box.

Actually, I am, but not in the same way my cat is. Data tables are what’s on the cards and some meetings about improving services for people who are struggling.

Who doesn’t love a #workcat?

I love public #Art. It’s a gift to anyone passing by and demands nothing in return. Even better when you know the story behind it. #Sheffield

@parcelforce.bsky.social hello I received this. A bit aggressive and not very helpful. No idea what was being delivered and no tracking number.

Well look what I found! #FoodLadders

If, like me you don’t know what a flesh-footed shearwater is. It’s one of these. It’s also sad what we’ve done to the planet.

Today’s Reading. Quite a bit on Speenhamland- an income top up that fluctuated with bread price. Book could have explained it when first introduced. Malthus critique was that it would promote having children and early marriage, but research does not bear out. Ended up acting as a wage suppressor.

Who doesn’t like a good #cat photo?

But our understanding of #hunger has changed from an inevitable consequence of the natural order, to a moral issue, to a social failing. Recognition that “their hunger threatens not just themselves but the health, wealth, and security of society as a whole” (p3)

What if we had a universal basic diet? 🍽️ Let's imagine a world where everyone gets the nutrition they need! What would be on your plate? #FoodForThought #UniversalDiet

Well I’ll take that!

Yes me too. Here is my office at work. The left hand wall is painted in whiteboard paint. It’s one of my #Dyslexia adjustments. I’m sitting taking the photo from my desk. The floor behind me is stacked with papers so it’s not as neat and tidy as this photo conveys.

I’m off to London (again!) tomorrow. This time meeting some new folk @designmuseum.bsky.social for a Land2040 roundtable. I’m looking forward to this as it’s a little different to the usual things I do. I’m a firm believer that we have designed our food system. This means we can redesign it.

So I did a book review and got these in return. Wish me luck.

She advocates for policies that are designed to benefit the majority, not just elites—In other words progressive policies. She calls for creating social capital and building social networks, and by expanding people’s capabilities to be food secure. We don’t do this by doing to people, we do with.

In the intro George talks about hunger as the result of injustice. Life expectancy, she writes, is important for judging inequalities. In England people living in the most deprived areas can expect, on average about a decade less and a greater period of time in poor health. Charity won’t fix this.

I’m working on an Oxford bibliography on food poverty—not my choice of phrase—I don’t like it—but in that effort I picked up a book called the hunger machine, written by Jon Bennett with an intro and conclusion by Susan George. It was written in 1987.
