Fair comparison. I always thought he looked like a pound shop James May who just woke up in a hedge after 15 pints the night before.

I suppose Gall-Peters is probably fairest in terms of setting it's non-distorted lines at 45deg north and south but any attempt to show the surface of a ball on a flat plain involves some adjustments.

Very good point. A lot of benefits are propping up the exploiter classes.

First house we had was like this. New builds ever since, carpet down, paint the walls and you are done.

Probably more useful advice than you get in a lot of house surveys.

Do it wrong and there is a good chance I will faint (no idea why but has happened several times over the years when having a blood test). Very small and rough nurse found this out when she was nearly squashed by my 18 stone of sudden unconsciousness. I do warn of this in advance.

Lovely photo, reckon slightly menacing or strangely illuminated alleys could be a nice subgenre.

Lady in house opposite us didn't realise we could see into her room. Seeing her topless became so common that even out 5 year old would shout 'twins are out again' every few days.

Used to live in a roughish part of Manchester and kids throwing fireworks about started end of September and lasted 6 weeks. Ban on public sale can't come soon enough as for every family garden display there are scores of kids letting them off in the street.

Plenty of building works happening, just that everything has got too expensive to earn a pittance as an apprentice for 3-4 years. Particularly true when you can do 95% of the job after a couple of years but have the boss creaming off you until your time is done.

Not bad in itself, it's just a story that people who are into it love dearly. As such, everyone has their own version of what it should be. Was brave, and possibly foolish, to film it.

It's the opposite of nostalgia, it's where the future we expected, dreaded or secretly hoped for (and sometimes all three at the same time) when young actually happened.

O Children, Higgs Boston Blues, People ain't no good, The Mercy Seat, The Weeping Song, Stagger Lee and even the (admittedly overplayed) Red Right Hand are all excellent and Carnage (with Warren Ellis) is worth a listen too.

Found it tougher than Threads, both in style and as I am from where it is set. Chatham Town Hall features prominently.

Give Jonathan Meades the money he needs to make whatever programme he fancies. Can't think of anything he has made that isn't fascinating and presented in a way that respects the viewers intelligence.

Even 85 years of river erosion couldn't damage this one although it has left it a bit cocked.

But aside from that Mrs Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?

This is the best thing about living on the coast, the contrast between the few bright busy days and the desolation and abandonment that makes up the rest of the year.

I wouldn't want Uranus as a near neighbour either (and before the pendants get involved, I know Neptune is closer by 16 billion km)

I have 3, getting a bit wobbly with age though so next in is going to be a tricycle in a few years I reckon. Holding off on new ones accordingly.
