Geocaching is about preserving our collective stories — whether it be history, stream of consciousness, ghost stories, social justice or a hike in the woods. It is about more than finding a container.

I usually don’t post about my own geocaches, but this new one has a story that took awhile to track down. It began when I read that in 1908 Mabel Cramer had worn a bathing suit that shocked people near where I now live. She set the “smart set agog.”

Before taking a holiday break until the new year, we said Ho Ho Ho at the North Pole and recalled the story of the Santa Within.

Santa Within - A Holiday Story
Santa Claus will be there when we need him, but don’t be on the naughty list. We found a geocache at North Pole where we remembered the Santa Within.

Sometimes when I come across discoveries like this, I wonder when someone will pick up the geocache that was left in the bottom of the Pacific. I seem to recall that the cache was archived, but it still would get an interesting reaction.

In the desert of California, near Slab City, Salvation Mountain has a message that God is Love. It has been called a national treasure.

A little early to avoid the holiday rush, this entry is about Simon Rodia’s Dream, to create something big. He had an archetypal calling to build the Watts Towers. Thoughts about a virtual geocache.

Simon Rodia’s Dream - A Question To Be Asked
Simon Rodia’s Dream built the Watts Towers. What did it mean when the work was finished and Rodia left it, never to return?

In Portland, a geocache (Poetry in Motion) asked finders to write a poetic log. Somehow, I always take the bait. This one started off with finding a paper scrap that I used to write my name for another cache.

My caching profile (geodarts) features Jökulsárlón, the glacier lagoon in Iceland. We returned to the area to visit an Ice Cave and the Diamond Beach where ice has washed to shore next to the lagoon

The Mojave Phone Booth virtual geocache is about more than a booth that is no longer in the desert. It is about a booth that is no longer in the desert. There is a difference.

The Iceland Noir writing festival was extraordinary both for the writers (including George R. R. Martin) and the country. But I caught the fly just in time for a hard flight gone. So my latest Caching diary focus out trip there when we stopped in Portland.

It had been years since we hiked the Pomo trail on the Sonoma coast. A good place to breathe deep and find a few caches. But mostly the breath, following it across ridges and taking in the area.

A hoosegow, in every sense of the word, at Clifton AZ. But before leaving town we were invited to see the old union hall with beautiful murals from the 1986 copper strike. Another geocaching diary.
