The USGS produces a nice quantification of the risk of aftershocks. 7% chance of another M5 and less than 1% chance of being followed by a M6.

If you had 101, that step won’t be traumatic. I’ve not taught historical in yrs; I don’t know the current best text, but whatever is used at your local college would be a place to start. I know an OER is currently in prep for the CA CC system, so you might check & see if there are any existing ones.

Just about any textbook used in an introductory historical geology class would be a good start. Check what is used at your local college.
