It's always interesting watching characters coming from otherwise nothing, watching the creativity designers have when bringing characters to life.
It's cool how Puyo Puyo Tetris chose to bring characters alive from mere blocks, creating characters fans can love. (6/6)

While you have characters like O and Zed who are more obvious in their representations, Ess' smoothed umbrella pattern, Tee's disk points, and Ai's glasses hide each block in subtle ways.
Or with Jay & Elle, whose designs are full embodiments of the J and L blocks. (5/6)

This game introduced Starship Tetra: a spaceship housing characters based off of each Tetromino, the name for a Tetris block.
With names like O, Tee, Jay, and Zed, it's not hard to work out which Tetromino each character is, though the designs do harken back to their origins. (3/5)

Characters have always been incremental to the Puyo Puyo franchise, and many have appeared in nearly every game, unlike Tetris which has rarely had true original characters.
That was until Puyo Puyo Tetris, where Sega sought to amend this, giving Tetris an original cast. (2/5)

Puyo Puyo Tetris released today, February 6th 2014, on the 3DS and Wii U.
Later famed for its Switch rerelease, the game saw the two great puzzle franchises played consecutively, alternating mid game.
However, Sega gave Tetris life in more ways than just gameplay. 🧵(1/5)

The game offers many types of plants to grow, but Tobacco is not one.
This has even caught out scientific research, with a 2001 study analysing adult themes in E rated games were stumped by the game's ESRB warning.
And the annoying part is that I still don't know why! (3/6)

Harvest Moon 64 released today, February 5th 1999, for the Nintendo 64.
The third game in the series, the entry introduced day time limits, marital partners, children, you can even drink alcohol, in an E rated game!

DK: King of Swing sold poorly, and nobody really talks about it much. To be fair nobody really talks about Clu Clu Land either.

Paon wanted to use an original character. While we do not know who they were thinking, there are hints towards it being a successor to the forgotten NES game Clu Clu Land.

Donkey Kong Country is what people expect of DK: our favourite ape fighting Kremlings and the dastardly King K. Rool.
This new take featured the same cast. The gameplay, however, was unlike anything DK before.

The Game is remembered for its unique gameplay, seeing DK swing from pegs rather than having full movement.

Today, we mainly associate level sharing with Mario Maker, and for good reason, it is brilliant.
However, I like to imagine that, for a time, across the playgrounds of Japan, a Wrecking Crew community thrived, built upon the joy of sharing their creations.
It's a nice thought.

This extra storage space allowed for a full level editor, giving players 96 spaces worth of level customisation, with every game asset available (bar Luigi).

Wrecking Crew is a 1985 action platformer where a pre-plumber Mario fights eggplants while knocking over concrete walls.
It was Mario's first outing after the original Super Mario Bros, and was still reminiscent of that Donkey Kong scaling structures gameplay.

Wrecking Crew released today, February 3rd 1989, on the Famicom Disk System.
An advancement on the arcade classic, this version allowed players to design and save levels to the disk, allowing for fan-made level sharing.
That's right; Wrecking Crew is the original Mario Maker. 🧵

After his death in 2015, the book Ask Iwata was published, documenting his memoirs across his life.
At the end, after everything he did, a selected list of his notable works can be seen.
And but one game sits at the start, the catalyst of his legacy.
That game was Pinball.
