Finally finished this. I've carried it for decades knowing one day I'd read it. What a tour de force - it covers geology, history, geopolitics and, central to all of the above, humanism.

I'm reading this for the first time. It's astonishing that, nearly 100 years after it was written, how little has changed for the low income worker.
